How has the trip changed your view of the world?
While almost every moment in the learning center was important and memorable, there is one that stands out to me. It was during the late afternoon of our second day in the village. Everyone was sitting in the library, talking with their buddies. I was with my buddy, Sokhna Mously Sarr, learning more about her through google translate and broken english and french. A boy from the village who wasn't in the buddy program had sat down next to us, but was quiet and was just observing. After a while, he tapped me and asked for my phone, to translate something. He only spoke wolof, so he said what he wanted to to Sokhna, who translated it through the phone to me. He wanted to know if I knew his sister, who lives in New York. He explained to me that she was like Mr. Seck and is very smart. He misses her and wanted to know how she was doing. While I didn't know her, I was able to tell the boy and Sokhna more about New York and America, a place that is so mystified for them yet so familiar to me. This moment really displayed to me that while there are so many differences in our lives, we have so much in common with the kids in the village. We miss our family and are curious. I hope to be able to continue to demystify America for them the way they welcomed me into their country.
